Goddess Parvati and Lord Shiva visit the town of Magadhpur in disguise. Parvati is impressed by the devotion of two people – the rich grain merchant, Mani Ram, and the poor washerman, Golak Nath. Shiva suggests that the merchant is shrewd while the washerman is careless with his blessings. Parvati challenges Shiva and tries to change Golak Nath’s destiny. Shiva agrees to this bet as long as both devotees are accorded with the same opportunities.
